Once you parry enough you can build up the gauge and then hit B (circle) again to stagger Vergil with a powerful punch.
Take some time to figure out all of Vergil’s attack cycles and the timing window on using your parry. All of Vergil’s attacks can be parried, by hitting B (circle) in Royal Guard if you get the timing right, and considering how much health the boss has, you’ll definitely want to reduce the amount of damage you take. Royal Guard is your absolute best friend in this boss battle, and you’ll basically want to beat Vergil at his own game parrying and countering. Just try and dodge once they all come together.
Vergil will also summon blue swords around you that will track and eventually converge on you. Focus on the copy to get it out of the way. Below fifty percent health, he’ll get two new attacks, one of which is to summon a Devil Trigger copy of himself that also attacks you. Just bide your time until his Trigger deactivates. When the boss activates his Devil Trigger your best bet is to dodge and avoid him as much as possible, as he’ll simply soak up all of your attacks. When the boss starts charging an attack a giant blue orb will appear around him, get out of the orb as fast as possible to avoid major damage. Occasionally Vergil will parry your own sword strikes, and launch a counterattack. Vergil quickly shoots out a blue orb that explodes into a flurry of sword strikes when it lands, or hits you. Vergil will teleport directly behind you and use a close-range three-hit combo. He’ll swoop down straight at you to cause damage, but can be blown out of the air if you activate Devil Trigger at the right time. Vergil launches into the air in Devil Trigger and flies around the arena. Sometimes instead of teleporting, Vergil will unleash the same sword flurry just by charging ahead. Vergil will teleport and disappear for a second, then reappear right by you and unleash a sword flurry.
